Estados Unidos Mexicanos - Viva México
Old, Unique and Fascinating Film Industry and Fun Alternative Indie Rock Back to Startpage

Mexican films and TV are huge in Latin America and there's something unique about it. The filmindustry with it's sensual
earthy dramas and psychotronic monster and lucha libre movies. Maybe the mix of a proud indian heritage, latin influences
and a revolutionary spirit does it? Here i want to spotlight great directors as Arturo Ripstein, the comic genius María Elena
Velasco and naturally also the wild horror and lucha libre masterpieces this Great country produced in the 1950's-1970's.
I will also highlight some cool bands from the FUN méxican indie rock scene as Los Abominables with beautiful Zette and
Elis Paprika. As a football fan i love El Tri, the great national squad and i want them to win the World Cup someday

El Maestro
Arturo Ripstein
México's Luis Buñuel

Arturo Ripstein is my favourite Mexican
film director and with Sex, Black Humour
and Machismo he cleverly provoke and
play with us like a Luis Buñuel about
conventions, religion, hypocrisy, death
and sexuality

Ripstein (born 1943) worked with Buñuel as an assistant director when the spaniard
made one of his Mexican film masterpieces, El Angel exterminador in 1962, and
Buñuel became his friend and mentor.
Ripstein directed his first film in 1965 and the Mexican maestro is still fully active
today, the always provocative, challenging and controversial film veteran. Often
a festival favourite abroad with films as El Otro and The Virgin of Lust

Downbeat crime-drama, visually stylish noir
in b&w about 2 sad and too old prostitutes.
It's so miserable and bleak it could also be a
pitch-black comedy ? I don't know but Arturo
is as fascinating as always. Artmovie alert

Prostitutes, priests, talk and loneliness

perspective. Very nice cinematography but
maybe not one of the greatest films from

La India María - María Elena Velasco (1940-2015 R.I.P.)

Méxican Velasco became a beloved film icon in her country and in Central America
as Loca María, the nutty indian woman in a long series of popular comedies.
Dressed nicely in a traditional indian way, with an unstoppable optimism, a warm
heart, tons of charm and a BIG smile, she handles every problem she encounter
during her many adventures. With some gravity also of how poor people and the
indigenous indians are treated, a sickness brought in by the European racists.
The India María movies mix slapstick, adventure, playing with words and genre
parody. Read more about this film series follow the picture link at left

Mexican Female Power - Las Luchadoras

The Mighty Tezomoc

Yes. Si. Lucha libre horror sci-fi, that's one of the greatest filmgenres Ever, insanely enjoyable and filled with humour.
Unique films that combines wrestling superheroes as El Santo and Blue Demon with aztec mummies, mad doctors,
vampire women and aliens. These delightfully unhinged gems were made during the 1950's - 1970's, a Gold period.
As some cineast put it: These films are like US 1940's horrors that has went Amok.

Chucho, Rubi, Lorena and Armando

A Subgenre and an ever bigger favourite of mine is Las Luchadoras (The Wrestling Women) with the uncomparable
beauties Lorena Velazquez and gringa Elizabeth Campbell as wrestlers Loreta/Golden Venus and The Golden Rubi.
In Las Luchadoras contra la Momia, one of my favourite trash horrors of all time, we can see the duo fighting against
a chinese villain and the the reanimated mummy of the aztec warrior Tezomoc. There's always a lot of wrestling scenes
with very obvious body doubles for the beauties, even though Campbell did some of the wrestling moves herself.
Yes, i'm Loco about latin bonita Lorena and the Gorgeous gringa Campbell. Another Lorena Velazquez classic is the
Sci-Fi Musical La Nave de los Monstruos where she play an evil alien woman and Piporro saves the world.
The Genius director behind these Luchadoras film insanity was Rene Cardona and i thank you very much Sir.

I first saw Wrestling women vs. the aztec mummy in the early 1990's on a US VHS and then a decade later on a much
to dark and fuzzy DVD and i've been waiting for a high quality transfer since then. Finally VCI Video released these
Luchadoras films in 2014 on dvd but without english subs. Supposedly they're restored and maybe so BUT they still
look fuzzy so the restoration was a poor job compared to great companies like Casa Negras fine DVD releases
