El

Arturo
Ripstein |
México's
Luis Buñuel |
|
Arturo
Ripstein is my favourite Mexican
film director and with Sex, Black Humour
and Machismo he cleverly provoke and
play with us like a Luis Buñuel about
conventions, religion, hypocrisy, death
and sexuality |
Ripstein
(born 1943) worked with Buñuel as an assistant director when the
spaniard
made one of his Mexican film masterpieces, El Angel
exterminador in 1962, and
Buñuel became his friend and mentor.
Ripstein directed his first film in 1965 and the Mexican maestro is still
fully active
today, the always provocative, challenging and controversial film veteran.
Often
a festival favourite abroad with films as El Otro and The Virgin of Lust |
|
Downbeat crime-drama, visually stylish noir

It's so miserable and bleak it could also be a

La
India María - María Elena Velasco
(1940-2015 R.I.P.) |
|

|
Méxican Velasco became a beloved film icon in
her country and in Central America
as Loca María,
the nutty indian woman in a long series of popular comedies.
Dressed nicely in a traditional indian way, with an unstoppable optimism,
a warm
heart, tons of charm and a BIG smile, she handles every problem she
encounter
during her many adventures. With some gravity also of how poor people
and the
indigenous indians are treated, a sickness brought in by the European
racists.
The India María movies mix slapstick, adventure, playing with
words and genre
parody. Read more about this film series follow the picture link at

Cuban Rumbera |
The
Whirlwind that became a legend of Méxican 1940-50's Golden Era
film |
|
Born 1921 in Havana she made big success
as a latino-dancer and filmdebuted in 1946.
Ninón became an icon in the for México
unique musical melodrama Cabareteras genre
with films often directed by Alberto Gout
|
The legend arised from her roles as The Good Girl Gone Bad, often as a
prostitute, in a row of musical-melodramas stylishly made in Noir-style
where
she sooner or later turns up at a nightclub. Where she performs in snazzily
choreographed dance numbers in rumba, salsa, mambo-style and with glimpses
of the afro-caribbean Santería religion. Ninón Sevilla,
a beautiful and very
charismatic actress from the golden Era days of Méxican film
|
|
A Superior Mexican romantic drama and
an absolute film classic with the sensual
Ninón Sevilla as the unlucky Elena.
Great stuff from Golden era of Méxican film
