Hong Kong Classics - The Golden Era and Hyperkinetic Film Back to Startpage

On this page i will talk about my favourites from The Golden Era of Hong Kong Film, which approx. lasted for a decade between 1983 - 1993
The films emanating from the then British Crown Colony were wild, unhinged and unique in the world with it's hyperkinetic inspired energy.
From this era came the re-animation of the crime film genre through the somewhat sentimental and romantic Hong Kong Noir, and inspired
by Sam Peckinpah John Woo lay the foundation for the modern action film. And then there's the delirious Category III genre with it's crazy
horror and sleaze, a type of film that has ceased to be. It's no more. And, let's not forget the glorious Martial Arts movies in which the great
Jackie Chan gave us impossible dangerous stunts never bettered, or the Female Fighters genre with icons as Cynthia Rothrock and Michelle
Yeoh. Yes, almost forgot the Funny Man, the master of slapstick and hilarious gags - Stephen Chow. The fantasy wuxia films was great too.

But this type of films has mostly ceased to be as with the gloriously deranged Category III films and the Female Fighting. HK films from the
Golden era had a unique style with their hyperkinetic pace and were even more energetic with their cantonese dubbing (the films were dubbed
well into the 1990's) and with atmospherical pictures of the Hong Kong night, maybe with a wailing saxophone on the soundtrack.
The Chinese handover took place in 1997 and the mainland's strict censor rules changed the way of making film in Hong Kong. The filmmakers
had to adapt to their biggest market and Category III had to go. Female Fighting just vanished. Martial arts has never reached the greatness
from the 1970's - 1980's again, but there has been a renaissance for the Wuxia film in HK-Mainland cinema and the crime-thriller thrives.

Stephen Chow (Chiao) The Funniest man in China - Hong Kong

The Funniest man in the world isn't Jim Carrey,
it's Stephen Chow. The King of nonsensical but
hilarious comedy. I love him but some can't stand
the man. Many of his earlier HK films have been
released in new re-mastered DVD editions lately

Stephen Chow/Chiao (Chow Sing Chi/Zhou Xing Chi) is a very funny
guy and with an unique nonsensical slapstick style of humour called
Mo Lei Tau that shifts between hysterically funny gags, hard to translate
word jokes and very vulgar pee and poop level jokes.
Born in 1962 he debuted in 1988 and has since entertained the chinese
in a long series of film-comedies. His breakthrough in the West came with
the 2001 Shaolin Soccer and the following Kung Fu Hustle
