Ringo Lam was at the height of his powers here, and
Chow Yun-Fat makes one
of his best performances in this Prison melodrama action with some comedy
added to the proceedings. Appropriate for a film made during the Hong
Kong
golden era. The soundtrack was nice too with beautiful old chinese songs.
CYF plays prisoner Chung Tin-Ching
and he's in jail for accidently killing his
wife. The life in prison is volatile as there are frictions between
Hongkies and
Mainlanders resulting in fights and riots and even killings. Ching is
also
tormented by the brutal and sadistic guards with prison boss Zao as
the worst
of the bunch. Elvis Tsui plays Zao and looks menacing for the part.
Ching has a small son who lives in an Orphanage (due
to Ching killing his
mother) and Ching plans to escape to see his son and befriends the leader
of the mainlanders, Lung/Dragon (Chen Sung Yung) who also wants to get
out of prison. Roy Cheung can be seen at the end as the future foe of
Ching
