Gialli & Eurocrime (poliziottesco/poliziesco: mafia vs. mafia or mafia vs. psycho cop) Page 2 ............ Page 1

A favourite film genre of mine is Gialli. The visually stylish, violent and
often macabre Italian crime-thrillers from the 1960's - 1970's called Gialli,

Yellow, after the color of the Pulp Fiction book series released in Italy.

One of the cinematographic Titans and the creators of the genre was
the great Mario Bava, the visual master and among his genre successors
were directors like Umberto Lenzi, Aldo Lado, Luciano Ercoli, Lucio Fulci,
Sergio Martino, Massimo Dallamano, Luigi Bazzoni and .... naturally, the
very influential genre master Dario Argento.

Then we have the 1970's Italian crime movies with mafia and/or police,
the Poliotteschi movies and gangster/mob movies, sub-genres within the
Eurocrime genre. Eurocrime? Yes, i guess basically 1970's continental
European crime movies, and very popular today among genre lovers (as
director Quentin Tarantino). One of the true Masters of the genre was/were
Fernando Di Leo and his films really has got some bite to them.

The pics at the side of this text show the sleeves of 2 old but nice Dario
Argento gialli VHS cassettes from the time before DVD

Crime thriller where a couple is taken as hostage
by some men out for revenge. A VERY BAD film
from Castellari, a fish out of water in this genre, but
a soundtrack from Morricone at least

Fun Mexican thriller-drama-giallo with moments of

A Great looking and very popular giallo about murder
in a catholic girlschool in London. Lots of atmosphere

An obscure and unseen crime-horror from Japan,
maybe a Neo-Giallo Noir with tons of visual style.
Gloriously unhinged about models, murders and
the amost apparition like killer Black Kiss.
Disturbing and fascinating. Recommended

Demented psycho thriller and a late giallo offering
(or maybe an early Neo-giallo) where a maniac cuts
out body parts from his victims and then place them
in the home of a recently widowed woman

Crime horror where a couple of restaurateurs who

A sometimes interesting film, but only mildly

Until Death (Per Sempre/Fino alla morte)

Direction: Lamberto Bava, production: 1987

Cast: Gioia Scola, David Brandon, Urbano Barberini
DVD in english audio, region all
US Mya Communication DVD edition

A very late entry to the gialli genre and with a
so-so reputation, but i like it due to the boobage
factor with both Serenea Grandi and Sabrina in it.
A bit trashy and sleazy but Lamberto entertains
us as usual when magazine models are in danger

Le Foto di Gioia (Delirium/Photo of Gioia)

Direction: Lamberto Bava, production: Italy 1987

Cast: Serena Grandi, Daria Nicolodi, Sabrina Salerno, David Brandon
DVD in english audio, region all

An OK B-giallo from Bava Jr. with a little flat
direction as usual, but also always entertaining
as usual from Lamberto when he rips off classics
of the genre. A psycho killer is loose even though
he should be very dead, how is it possible ?

Morirai a mezzanotte (Midnight Killer)

Direction and co-script: Lamberto Bava, production: Italy 1986

A Blade in the Dark and Macabro are my two
favourite films of always enjoyable Lamberto
the son of Mario. A suspenseful and slick giallo
inspired by Dario Argento where women die
around a baffled composer in a big rented villa

A Blade in the Dark (La Casa con la Scala nel Buio)

Slow but stylish psycho-horror-drama when a blind
guy rent out some rooms to a woman obsessed with
her dead lover. Also a "beautiful" mother-daughter
relationship and an amazing Zinny as the evil child.
Maybe not a typical giallo but very impressive

Macabro (Macabre/Frozen Terror)

A Surprisingly Great minimalistic, to the point of
being almost experimental, car crime drama. Daring
from a man of his age, but the film was sadly lost
and seen by none. Here in 2 versions, a great film
with an audio commentary and a Making Of

Rabid Dogs (Cani arrabbiati) + Kidnapped

Direction: Mario Bava, production: 1975

Cast: Riccardo Cucciolla, Lea Lander, Luigi Montefiore
DVD in italian audio with english subtitles, region 1
US Anchor Bay DVD edition - Mario Bava Collection Vol. 2

Maybe my favourite Bava film, misunderstood, under-
rated and seldom seen in it's original uncut version.
Visually masterful dreamlike about a german tourist
lost in Toledo and her meetings with the Devil.
Intensely atmospherical and saturated with melan-
cholia. Very ambitious and Savalas is great

Lisa and the Devil (Lisa e il diavolo)

Direction: Mario Bava, prod: Italy, Spain, West Germany 1972

Cast: Elke Sommer, Telly Savalas, Sylva Koscina, Alida Valli
DVD in english audio, region all

Bava's famous proto-slasher with 11 gruesome
murders when a group of people fights about some
valuable property at the bay. Great gore from Carlo
Rambaldi and a nice ST from Stelvio Cipriani.
I remember buying this on a french secam VHS in
the 1980's to be able to see it uncut

A Bay of Blood (Ecologia del Delitto/Twitch of the Death
Nerve/Carnage/Bloodbath/La Baie Sanglante/ etc etc.

A macabre psycho-horror where a fashion designer
goes havoc due to a nasty wedding- combined
mother fetish. Not one of Bavas better films sadly
but this obscure offering do look great visually,
and it has genre cult actress Dagmar Lassander in it

A Hatchet For the Honeymoon (Una Hacha para la luna de miel/
Blood Brides/ The Red Sign of Madness/Il Rosso segno della follia)

Not really a Giallo in spite of it's title, but more of
a serial killer crime horror. Not good at all, but OK
to come from the "New" rotten filmmaker Argento
Shot in Turin and the Byron Deidra gag was fun

Giallo

Direction: Dario Argento, production: 2009

So BAD it's hard to believe. An enjoyable mess
for bad film afficionados. Dario's absolutely
stinkeroo ending of his Mother's Trilogy. Very
violent with a beyond bad ending. It looks like,
and smells like a pile of Hippopotamus dung

Mother of Tears (La Terza Madre)

Direction: Dario Argento, production: 2007

Cast: Asia Argento, Valeria Cavalli, Moran Atias
DVD in english audio, region 1

A possessed raccoon fur causes a lot of death
and fun gore in Dario's second offering to the TV
MOH series. With commentary, making of etc.
Nowadays Argento's much better in the smaller
TV format as his feature films suck desperately

Pelts (From Masters of Horror series)

Direction: Dario Argento, production: 2006

Cast: Meatloaf, John Saxon
DVD in english audio, region 1

Argento having a lot of Fun in a delightfully
bizarre horror-comedy about an animal or some
sort of creature girl. With lots of extras as the
penis biting scene, commentary etc.

Jenifer (From Masters of Horror series - Season 1)

Direction: Dario Argento, production: 2005

A really nice film made for Italian TV and a
pastisch and tribute to the great Alfred Hitchcock
about a student peeping on his beautiful neighbour.

Not really a giallo or even a horror in the usual
sense but more as a CSI TV series episode, and
one of my 2-3 least liked Argento movies

The Card Player (Il Cartaio)

Direction: Dario Argento, production: 2004

Cast: Stefania Rocca, Fiore Argento
DVD in english audio with english subtitles, region 1
US Anchor Bay DVD edition

I re-watched this giallo after 20 years and I liked
it a lot better this time. A mixed bag, but much is
very good, as the opening Set Piece train murder,
the music by Goblin and the performance of the
great Max von Sydow - R.I.P.

Sleepless (Non Ho Sonno)

Direction, co-story, co-script: Dario Argento, production: Italy 2001

Cast: Max von Sydow, Stefano Dionisi, Rossella Falk, Barbara Lerici
Blu-ray in english or italian dub audio with english subtitles, region A
US Scorpion Releasing 2020 bluray edition

A Re-Evaluation of this, maybe Argento's most
hated film. I was shocked when i first saw it and
when rewatching it in august 2010 it was still BAD,
but in a fun trashy way. Phantom is really a matinée
childrens adventure with comedy, gore and hilarious
over the top bad acting from Sands and Asia. No,
this is not Dario's worst film, but enjoyable as trash

The Phantom of the Opera (El Fantasma de la Opera)

Direction: Dario Argento, production: Claudio Argento 1998

Cast: Asia Argento, Julian Sands, Nadia Rinaldi, Andrea Di Stefano
DVD in english audio, region all
US A-Pix DVD (a very early DVD edition)

A Visually very inspired but uneven Neo-Giallo
where the Syndrome afflicted cop Asia hunts a
serial killer. Great start at the Uffizi Gallery in
Firenze, wow, but a long boring ending.
With a fine soundtrack by Ennio Morricone

The Stendhal Syndrome

Asia is a Roumanian girl on the run in Minneapolis

Cast: Asia Argento, Piper Laurie, Christopher Rydell

Violent and visually mindblowing with ravens, needles
and a bullet through the eye of Daria Nicolodi with
music from Verdi. About the ill-fated production of
Verdi's opera MacBeth and the last really great film
from Dario Argento (30 years now ..... )

Dario's most original, personal and quirky film

worldly beautiful Jennifer as the Lady of the

A masterful, brutal and icily cold giallo where a

commit copy-cat killings from his books.
With Veronica Lario's famous arm-stump spray

Tenebre (Sotto gli Occhi dell'Assassino)

Direction: Dario Argento, production: 1982

Cast: Anthony Franciosa, John Saxon, Veronica Lario

Number 2 in the Mothers series. Visual fireworks with
a gorgeous start but a disappointing ending. I love the
Cat Lady in Rome and the Irene Miracle scene with
the waterfilled room in NY. Warning for cat throwing.
Mario Bava did his last work on this film, some
optical effects. Keith Emerson did the fine score

The Giallo masterpiece in a nice blu-ray edition.
Unjustly overlooked is the great Clara Calamai as the
mother of Carlo, what an intense performance.
I can't remember seing her or her being discussed in
any extras. The commentary calls her a Fascist (era)
actress and Nicolodi attacks Dario, again, in the extras

Deep Red (Profondo Rosso)

Another absolute giallo classic from Dario, and
that scene were he let us see the killer for a very
short moment without the viewers knowing it.
A Masterpiece. The window scene he borrowed
from Sette scialli di seta gialla
