Shintaro Katsu (född Toshio Okumura 29/11 1931) var son till en skådespelare och både han och hans storebror (mer känd som
Tomisaburo Wakayama, eller stenhårde Itto i Baby Cart serien) hade alltså agerandet i blodet. När Katsu 1962 fick sitt riktigt stora
genombrott som Zatoichi, hade han redan en lång filmkarriär bakom sig (med ett nittiotal filmer under västen). Storrökare som han
var dog han tragiskt och alltför tidigt av cancer 1997 och landssorg utbröt i Japan, för så älskade var hans filmer


Min kärleksförklaring till Zatoichi gestalten:

Blind och lite rund i ansiktet, fryntligt godmodig och sjaskigt klädd samt nersolkad av vägens damm så bryter Shintaro Katsu djärvt
och intelligent mot alla filmklichéer
, både förr som senare, om hur en svärdshjälte på film skall se ut och bete sig. Istället gjorde han,
och allt inom underhållnings-filmens ramar då förstås, med en påfallande stor värdighet, karisma och känsloinlevelse om den mänskliga
situationen/varat, Zatoichi gestalten - den blinde vandraren till sin helt egna och non-macho aktiga figur.
Ja, till en av filmhistoriens allra mest märkliga, och om inte rentav till den mest unika av dem alla. För de som föredrar filmhjältar av det
vanliga och mer stereotypt lättköpt hårdaslaget, kan Zatoichi vara både överraskande och utmanande. Shintaro Katsu hade som Zatoichi
en enorm närvaro på duken


Filmserien består av en rad snyggt filmade action-draman, ofta lätt melankoliska i tonen om tillfälliga och till synes slumpvisa mötena
mellan människor som inte kommer att ses igen. Filmer med onda människor, med goda människor, och där ibland närhet uppstår eller
rentav kärlek, men där den evigt ensamme och rotlöse vandraren Zatoichi mot slutet, som alltid, fortsätter sitt sökande efter mening och
frid, den ensamma resa som vi alla människor innerst inne har att företa i våra liv.

Ett sökande, det skall sägas, efter en synnerligen svårfunnen frid då Zatoichi i hela sitt liv, som fattig och blind (i det dåtida Japan) och
längst ner på samhällets botten, drivits av hämnd- och bekräftelse-känslor mot onda överklassare och översittare/skurkar och därför lärt
sig svärdskonstens hemligheter - som han ofta får tillfälle att utöva i filmerna

Filmerna är i genrerna jidai-geki (historiska) och chanbara-matatabi samurajfilmer (svärdsfighting med kringvandrande spelare) och ett ofta
återkommande moment i filmerna är, att:

Zatoichi kommer till en by/stad plågad av gangsters som utpressar kvinnor till prostitution pga makes/förälders skuldsedel
Zatoichi i slutet av filmen förpassat de flesta av slemsäckarna till den andra sidan
Zatoichi i början av filmen möter Samuraj, med viss stil eller rentav en vän, som han i slutet motvilligt tvingas möta i en duell
Zatoichi besöker lokal spelhåla, med slakt till följd, antingen pga av att han vunnit för mycket eller haket använt falska tärningar
Zatoichi möter en döende person i början av filmen, vars sista önskning han lovar försöka uppfylla

Filmerna i Zatoichi-serien har getts ut i fina restaurerade DVD utgåvor i USA av goda Home Vision Entertainment (med ibland även läckra
replikas på japanska originalposters bifogat i fodralet) och av likaledes goda bolaget AnimEigo.
