Repeat Performance (1947)

US Flicker Alley Blu-ray and DVD 2 disc combo edition

The King of Film Noir, Eddie Muller and i.a. Alan K. Rode and the UCLA Film & Television Archive presents a presumingly
lost unique Fantasy Film Noir melodrama in a restored beautiful version released on Blu-ray and DVD by Flicker Alley.
Released here in a nice 2 disc bluray and DVD combo and with interesting extras and a booklet with texts and pictures.

Repeat Performance, somehow disappeared after it's initial release in 1947 but with it's fantasy element it's a quite unique Film
Noir melodrama. Joan Leslie in the main role may be a stupid Bimbo who hangs on to her asshole of a husband even though
he clearly hates her deeply and openly, but she was gorgeous for sure. Joan Leslie Hot, but i'm not convinced that she was a
great actress. I don't think i've ever seen her in another film (but i guess i have) and she mostly did TV since the early 1950's.

My complaint: In this film she plays the role of a famous theatre actress and her husband played by Louis Hayward was 38
years old when making this film, and her entourage theatre friends were middle-aged. Joan Leslie was 21-22 years old here
and she's surely supposed to play a much older woman, but OK she's lovely so let's forget about such a small objection.

The film starts on New Years Eve and a woman, Sheila Page (Joan Leslie) has just shot and killed her husband, Barney
(Louis Hayward). She's a famous theatre actress and Barney is an unsuccessful playwright, and an alcoholic asshole
bitter and hateful towards his beloved star of wife.
Just when the clock strucks twelve and we've entered 1947 Sheila flees her apartment, joins her friends at a party and
tells her best friend, the poet William (Richard Baseheart, the great actor from 1948 "He Walked by Night") that she
has killed Barney. Sheila wishes she could re-live the latest year again, and when visiting her friend and producer John
(Tom Conway, brother of George Sanders) she realizes that 1946 has indeed started all over again and it's january 1st 1946.

Sheila is overjoyed and she will make it better with Barney this time. She will look to that he won't fall in love with the
NY playwright Paula Costello (Virginia Field) this time, something that led to the catastrophe the last time. She also
will warn best friend William from hanging out with the rich Mrs. Shaw (Natalie Schafer) so he won't get into some
serious trouble. But, is it that easy to to make things different if you got another chance ?
