Maybe this film is Miyazaki's least liked film or the most obscure one
anyway. An Adventure Action taking place
sometimes between the late 1920's and early 1930's, i guess ? Between
the WW1 and WW2 anyway, and the story
is simple but yet strange and unique as it's hero is the Italian ace
battle pilot Marco, or Porco Rosso (The
Red Pig,
alluding to WW1 ace pilot The Red Baron). I re-watched this film in
March 2023 and 20 years since the last time i
watched it (then on the Hong Kong DVD edition) and I'm still not getting
why Marco was transformed into a Pig ?
Yes, some sort of Curse surely as he once was human but a curse by whom
and why ? Maybe he saw something
forbidden during the war, where the dead pilots go to die high up over
the clouds or something ?
Once again since Miyazaki's 1986 "Laputa - The
Castle in the Sky" there are flying pirates, Air Pirates, in a
main role,
"The Pirates of the Adriatic Sea" (and in Laputa there were
"Momma and her Boys").
Porco Rosso flies a red Hydroplane, battles the pirates and sometimes
relaxes at the Night Club Hotel Adriano,
situated on an island in the Adriatic and run by the beautiful and alluring
Madame Gina. A place where pirates
as well as Bounty Hunters hang out, it's neutral ground and there are
no fighting there and everyone adores
Madame Gina. She's something of a Femme Fatale from a Film Noir movie,
and she loves Porco Rosso, or Marco
and she knew him before he became a Pig.
When "The Joint Pirate League" challenges
Porco Rosso and, with the help of the american ace pilot Curtis,
shoots Marco down he has to go to Milano to repair the plane. Fio is
a young girl but already a skilled airplane
mechanic and she fixes Marco's plane. My favourite parts of the film
were Marco's flight to Milano, the industries
there and then the flight over the lush italian landscape, just wonderful.
There will be a showdown, a duel between Curtis and the Pig to see who's
the best pilot. If romantic fool Curtis
wins he will get to marry young Fio, and if Porco wins Curtis will have
to pay Porco Rosso's plane repair costs.
Film is presented in widescreen 1.85:1 with japanese
audio PCM stereo 2.0 and with swedish subtitles, region B.
