A Good looking but unfortunately not very good entry
from Takashi Miike.
A blend of a supernatural ghost story with art-drama that didn't engage
me very much, even though the
theatrical scenes from the play looked good and had some tension in
them.
In fact, this may be the least enjoyable Takashi Miike film i've seen
yet. Routinely made it seems.
A Theatre Company is rehearsing their performance of
the japanese kabuki play and ghost story Yotsuya Kaidan.
A Tale about a bummed up and out of work samurai Iemon Tamiya who murders
his stepfather and marries his
daughter and then murder her to marry a 16 year old girl and being employed
by his new richer stepfather.
He's Evil and do get his comeuppance.
The actor playing the role of Iemon Tamiya in the play
is Kosuke Hasegawa and he's played by Ebizo Ichikawa
and the actress playing his poor wife in the play is Miyuki Goto and
she's played by Ko Shibasaki.
Needless to say Kosuke and Miyuki is a couple and the happenings in
the play reflects what happens between
them in the "real" world. Kosuke is Evil and he do get his
comeuppance .... or not, there's an ambiguity about
what's happening. There's some gore and nastiness.
anamorphic widescreen, DTS 5.1 or 5.1 japanese with english subs, only
