The Crimes of the Wire Strangler
More and more really obscure Gialli are released as
the known "Good" ones already has
been released. But, the second tier one's are welcome too and this Spanish
giallo seems
to be one of the more obscure ones as it wasn't released in Spain until
1975.
The film is OK but not too exciting. What's good are genre queen Maria
Rohm being seen
in no less than three role parts(2 x prostitute and a nanny), a very
fine theme song sung
by Ann Collin and some crisp cinematography.
In this film the Psycho Killer is our protagonist and
we know already from the beginning
who's the killer. The perp is a young man (about 20 years old perhaps),
Julio Nieto (David
Carpenter) with rich parents as his industrialist father Enrique (James
Philbrook).
Julio is ignored by them and left on his own to do what he wants, and
nobody cares.
Unfortunately due to a childhood trauma Julios No. 1 hobby is to strangle
prostitutes
with steel wire and the first victim in this film is played by horror
cult actress Maria Rohm
Could hanging out with sweet Monica (Teresa Rabal, daughter
of the great Francesco
Rabal, and who resembles Catherine Zeta Jones) make him change his ways
?
Julio still has his childhood toys left in his room at home and he's
seen playing with a
dolls head in a close-up scene that makes you think of the 1974 Deep
Red by Argento
