Resourceful Kiki calms my soul.
Yes, for some reason she does that and in a foreign land that resembles
Sweden a whole lot,
the capital Stockholm and the medieval city wall of Visby, Gotland,
with maybe some flavour of an austrian or a hungarian town.
Even though Kiki's a witch and the cover promises action, she's mostly
doing her young-witch apprenticeship in a calm and
orderly way. This film is absolutely beautiful, it's soothing and about
growing up.
Kiki has just become 13 years old and for a witch it's
then time to be independent, to find her way in the world and a suitable
town
where she can find her magic. Off she goes with her broom and her human-like
talking cat Jiji, and the animation when she flies
through the night is .... Magic, just gorgeous animation and another
beautiful masterpiece of Miyazaki.
When she's in her chosen city she's hired as a delivery girl ... witch,
and the bakery wife Osono offers her a room to stay. Kiki then
delivers bread in Kiki's Flying Delivery Service for the Gutio Kipan
Bakery. We get to see her deliver bread to an assortment of
customers and meet some adventure on the way. She sees Jiji, her talking
cat, fall in love and turn into a regular cat-cat, maybe they
are both leaving childhood behind them and with that their (children's)
magic capacity to communicate ?
There's a street portal in the film that's instantly
recognizable for every Stockholm citizen, as I am, being located on
Kungsgatan in
the centre of the city, and there are also some scenes from Gamla Stan,
the old Town, including signs in swedish. There are also
fir trees and the northern type of crows (grey and black).
So, this resourceful young witch Kiki calms my soul
and this is also one of my favourite Miyazaki films. It's not a childrens
film as
surely youngsters would get bored by the slow meditative pace to it.
Oh, i almost forgot the scene with our City Hall (Stadshuset)
as a famous Stockholm view and the roofs of the buildings, also instantly
recognizable for every Stockholmer.
