Suspenseful thriller about a quiet Goa family, the
Salgaonkars. They are the father, the cable TV provider Vijay
(played perfectly in his laid back style by good old Ajay Devgan), the
mother Nandini (Shriya Saran), the youngest
daughter Anu (Mrunal Jadhav) and the teenage daughter Anju (Ishita Dutta).
Vijay mostly stays up at evenings and nights watching the films he's
sending on his network, everythings copacetic
in Goa .... except maybe for some bickering between Vijay and the much
despised policeman Gaitonde, the local
corrupt cop. Sub Inspector Laxmikant Gaitonde (played brilliantly by
Kamlesh Sawant) has an old grudge against
the self-confident and popular Vijay, and he's stealing this film with
his performance, he's vibrating with mischief and
it's impossible not to stare at him fascinated. Wouldn't he just love
to have Vijay locked into a cell at the station ?
The Great Gaitonde - Scary Policeman
But, things are about to change. It starts innocently
with Vijay's daughter Anju going on a school trip but turns into a
nightmare when a boy has filmed her naked in the shower by a hidden
camera. This boy turns up one evening at the
Salgaonkar house and he wants something in return for not putting the
footage on the Net. Sex?
In the ruckus that follows the boy, Sameer (Rishab Chadda), gets hit
on his head and dies. Panic. What to do? Go to
the police and tell everything as it happened, that it was an accident.
Emphatically No.
Well, and here follows the explanation, and that's a
bit hard to grasp as a westerner and scandinavian. There's the
Honour angle .... we will be ruined .... the family honour .... her
life will be destroyed if the public will get to know that
she had the un-decency to take a shower nude (?) and be caught by a
hidden camera.
The girl's value as a Thing, just like some property would then decrease
and be worthless, honour .... my ass, these
sick values are without any honour at all. Inhuman. But, the filmmakers
raise a growing problem for youngsters world
wide, where people use their mobiles to film or take pictures in stealth
mode and then putting it on the Net.
So, the family solves the situation by burying the body
in their backyard and hiding his car. Vijay calms them by saying
"We have done nothing wrong" ...... eeeh, i don't know about
that, but OK. Unlucky for the family the boy Sameer
is the son of the Goa Inspector general of Police Meera Desmukh
(Tabu) and she's a TOUGH cookie, and when
the hunt for the missing boy really kicks into high gear then the Salgaonkars
better have waterproof alibis.
And Sub Inspector Laxmikant Gaitonde, he's just waiting for a chance
to get his hands (and his baton) on Vijay.
Ajay Devgan is good, Tabu is formidable as a woman filled
with fury and Kamlesh Sawant is great. Actually, Vijay
seemed a just a little bit smug with all his smart superiority, so i
was almost rooting for the Bad Guy policeman Gaitonde,
but that's me and i'm maybe a bit cynical after watching too many films.
