Visually exciting and suspenseful Sci-Fi Noir drama by Alex Proyas
(i.a. The
Crow) made in 1998 about a city dwelling in eternal darkness.
A Dark dystopia with the style of German silent movie expressionism,
of the
futuristic Fritz Lang masterpiece "Metropolis" and of American
Film Noir.
John Murdock (Rufus Sewell) wakes up in a Hotel room
without any
memories and there's a dead woman lying on the floor. He escapes just
before
three ghastly almost vampire looking men arrives. John is suspected
to be
a serial killer of prostitutes on the run from the police.
About 7 minutes of the movie in the Director's Cut
we get to hear Goddess
Jennifer Connelly sing (I'm a big fan
of her in her 1980's and 1990's films).
In the Director's Cut she sings all the songs i.a. "Night has
a Thousand
Eyes" including in the end credits but in the Theatrical Cut
Anita Kelsey
sings the songs.

Jennifer plays the role of Emma Murdoch and John,
who left her three weeks
ago, is her husband, even though they don't seem to know each other.
Dr. Daniel P. Schreber (Kiefer Sutherland) tells her that John has
suffered
a psychotic break and suffers from amnesia.
Police inspector Bumstead (William Hurt) investigates the murders.

What is Shell Beach ? Why does people only have vague notions of their
past ? What about 12 o'clock ? Who are the men in black chasing John?
The film is ambitious with a lot of interesting themes but it was
a Box
Office flop and has since become a Cult Classic.
I think it's better and more interesting than The Matrix, but that's
me.

Note April 2024: In the audio commentary with
assholes Goyer
and Dobbs one of them attacks Jennifer Connelly for giving a BAD
performance. For blank acting and this he does in a disgusting
way with a smug smile.
This creep totally ignores that Connelly's Emma Murdoch is
supposed to have a blank and confused appearance and if you
have seen the film you know why that is.
This asshole has written the film so he should
know. But No.
Maybe he hit on her and was snubbed ?
