Dario Argento's Deep Cuts (1972 - 1987)

US Severin Films 4 disc 2024 bluray edition - region all

Argento's TV stuff he made for RAI Television between 1972/1973 - 1987

Disc one and two features the 1972-1973 TV series La Porta sul buio / Door into Darkness with
4 episodes and with 1 and maybe 2 directed by Dario Argento.
Door into Darkness has been released earlier on a DVD from Mya Communication 2 disc, but
this Severin release is guaranteed a legit edition.
The 4 episodes were shot in TV ratio 4:3 and Argento hosts them as an italian Hitchcock and he
introduces them and even makes a cameo performance as old Hitch.

The Third episode "Eyewitness" must have been my introduction to the Giallo genre as I remember
seeing it on swedish TV in the mid 70's. It was the window scene that scared me. My first giallo.
Argento wrote and directed episode 2 - The Tram under the alias Sirio Bernadotte, and in reality
he also directed episode 3 - Testimone Oculare (Eyewitness) as Roberto Pariante was sacked.

Disc 1 episode 1 - The Neighbour (Il Vicino di casa) Direction and story: Luigi Cozzi. 58 minutes

A couple with a baby has rented an apartment at the sea, but their upstairs neighbour acts
mysterious and becomes scary. He's based on Raymond Burr's performance in "Rear Window".
I wasn't very impressed by this episode (the house was situated next to a well traficked road?)

Disc 1 episode 2 - The Tram Direction and story Dario Argento is a good Whodunit with fine
camera work and a great soundtrack by Giorgio Gaslini (at the end specially) resembles Inferno.

A woman is found murdered on a tram and police inspector Giordani investigates how a woman
could've been killed in front of all the passengers. As one of the passengers we can see the
quirky old lady playing a neighbour in "The Case of the Bloody Iris". 54 minutes.
Extra: Audio Commentary with Nathaniel Thompson and Troy Howarth.

More extras on Disc 1 are Documentaries Dario Argento Part 1 and 2 (122 minutes in total)

Disc 2 episode 1 - Eyewitness (Testimone oculare) Direction: Dario Argento (Roberto Pariante)

Great episode with the brilliant window scene and the lovely Marilu Tolo makes this my
favourite episode of the quartet. 56 minutes.
.
Roberta (Tolo) is on her way home driving her car at night when suddenly a woman stumbles
in front of her car. The woman is lying on the ground in front of her car and she's dead or
dying. Robertasees he killer at the side of the road and she runs for help.
The police arrives at the supposedly "murder scene" but finds nothing, no body or no blood.

Disc 2 episode 2 - The Doll (La Bambola) Direction: Mario Foglietti 62 minutes

A dangerous man (Robert Hoffman) escapes from a mental hospital. He's carrying a briefcase
and he possibly kills a woman, Elena (Erika Blanc), the owner of a fashion company. He then
contacts the redhead beauty Daniela (Maria Vernier, then an insanely beautiful woman, but
later with botched plastic surgery and almost not recognizeable, today a TV star). OK episode
Extra: Audio Commentary with Nathaniel Thompson and Troy Howarth to Eyewitness

More extras on Disc 2 are

always brilliant Federico Caddeo the unsung master of the italian genre film extras)

15 episodes TV series and included in the 1987 Giallo Talk Show. A series with Taxi drivers
getting involved with the solving of crime mysteries. The episodes directed by Luigi Cozzi
and Lamberto Bava. Antonella Vitale plays the driver Calypso (and I think she was Dario's
girlfriend at the time, can be seen in Opera also at this time) ? Each episode appr. 15 minutes.

Corinne Clery is in episode 8 directed by Cozzi, Brett Halsey in episode 7 and in the sweet
episode 13 "Christmas Giallo" a very young Asia Argento can be seen looking for her
father at a circus saving him from being shot by her mother Dalia (Daria Nicolodi).
