I saw this film in streamed video on Youtube and for
once the picture quality was OK. Still, there seems to be only
a few films with nice picture quality and very often HD doesn't mean
HD after all, also this film got english subs.
Close Range Love was an OK romantic melodrama that works because of
the actors, especially the 2 main
roles with Nana Komatsu and Tomohisa Yamashita who both were likeable
characters. And this film, also, is
based on a manga. Komatsu was really impressive as the controlled but
soon lovestricken A-student, and i'm
sure that she's on her way to big things in the future (if you can trust
wikipedia she's filming with Martin Scorsese
at the moment). This film is one of her 2 films made in 2014 and the
other was the much talked about The World
of Kanako, the ultra-violent and gory crimethriller she made with Koji
Yakusho. The 2 actors, Komatsu and
Tomohisa Yamashita, are both ridiculously good looking and were delightfully
likeable.
Komatsu was only 17 or 18 when this film was made and
she's perfect for the role and in the right age for it,
but somehow her great beauty made me think she was older.
There's a new english teacher in the school, Haruka
Sakurai (Tomohisa Yamashita) and all girls fall in love with
him and flirts a lot. The supersmart A-student Yuni Kururugi (Nana Komatsu)
however seems to be unaffected
of his good popstar looks. Yuni's a very controlled girl and always
best in class. Her parents work abroad and
her guardian is her cousin Akechi (Hirofumi Arai) who's also a teacher
in her school (High School? I'm never sure
about what this school before University studies is called in Japan).
Yuni's dreaming of attending classes under her
idol professor at the University of California.
Well, Sakurai is defending him well against the lures of the young student
girls. He's an engaged and good teacher
in english and about 25-28 something in age, himself still young. Guess
what happens .... or not, we all know what
will happen. Yuni and Sakurai fall in love. He knows this relation is
Tabu and forbidden, but still, this is Big Love.
Can they keep it secret, and will the appearance of Sakurai's old girlfriend
Mirei (Asami Mizukawa) complicate
the matter? Mizukawa has nothing to do in her small underwritten part,
sadly as i liked her (saw her in Bilocation).
Yuni's best and only friend Nanami is played by Mizuki Yamamoto.
This is paperlight fluff but Nana Komatsu has got some charisma and
the actors were great too.
