With a beautiful and super cool intro theme by the legendary Stiff
Records Acron Ohio darling Rachel Sweet, and with tons of nice music
from the 1960's Dance Craze.
This film, my favourite film of John Waters, is 100 % Charm and i
think i've seen it at least 10-15 times by now, first in a VHS edition
and then
in this DVD edition. I will have to get a Bluray of "Hairspray"
too, soon. I must see The adventures of Traci Turnblad again ....
and again.
Hairspray
- A Declaration of Love from John Waters to the city
of Baltimore of his youth, with it's cool TV Pop program "The
Corny Collins
Show" (in real life "The Buddy Deane Show", a local
version of nationally broadcasted "American Bandstand".
Fantastic Dance Music and
with a flood of dances with complicated moves that followed in the
steps of Chubby Checker's "The Twist" and "The Limbo",
and also with
Beatniks, the Civil Rights movements for equal rights to black americans,
but primarily about the most inportant issue - a really High Hair.
Baltomore 1962 - The plumpy or Fat Traci
Turnblad (a great Ricki Lake
in her first film role) decides that she also will be a permanent
cast
dancer with the "Corny Collins Show", that she will steal
the hunkiest guy in school, Link, from the snotty rich girl Amber
Van Tussle and
to become A Star. In the world of John Waters is's always the losers,
the outsiders and the persecuted that are the main persons and the
winners in his films. Yes, "Free
Traci Turnblad, Segregation Never, Integration Now"
and John Waters for President.
Divine is huge and fantastic as the loving mom of Traci, Debbie Harry
is funny as the evil racist mother of Amber and Rhytm and Blues legend
Ruth Brown is great as the black DJ Motormouth Mabel. Pia Zadora and
Cars singer and great producer Ric Ocazek plays a beatnik couple
and Colleen Fitzpatrick is very fine as the mean rich girl Amber.
Me myself, as a huge fan of Rachel Sweet
(i had all her records on Stiff and CBS Columbia ) almost levitated
when i watched this film the 1st
time and heard the intro song, the super great "Hairspray".
Rachel Sweet little Acron girl with the HUGE voice, and i think this
1988 soundtrack
from the film was the last time she was heard on a record. I saw her
in an early Seinfeld episode and, i think, she sung the national anthem
in
a Canada Cup ice-hockey tournament. She apparently then became a successful
TV producer.
Hairspray was made into
a Broadway musical early 2000's and a mainstream re-make with John
Travolta as Edna Turnblad was made in 2007
and where the Hollywood Turds made changes to the original story.

Tillägg 2010: Naturligtvis är den här filmen mest för
kultfilmsälskare och den stora mainstreampubliken lär antagligen
inte förstå sig på filmens
alternativa charm, utan hålla till godo med en urvattnat och
steriliserat mainstream-godkänd musikal och film 2007 på
musikalen, som blivit en
enorm succé de senaste åren. Ja, jag hörde en som
sa att hon gillade Hairspray och jag blev förstås förtjust
och fick för ett ögonblick tillbaka
hoppet på den svenska Hollywood-ifierade och Deep State-ifierade
svenska tonårsgenerationen. Jag tyckte det var kul att hon gillade
en non-
mainstream regissör som Waters, men fick ett blankt ansiktsutryck
som svar, hon hade förstås aldrig hört talas om John
Waters utan hade
sett på den nya urvattnat steriliserade och familjevänliga
filmen.
Till råga på eländet kunde man dessutom i Aftonbladet
fredagen den 6 augusti 2010 låta sig bländas av filmskribenten
X stora filmkunskaper,
mannen med den genomkommersiella banala filmsmaken skrev detta om
nyinspelningar av film som skåpar ut originalen:
"Hairspray. John Waters film blev musikal. Som blev en ny, bättre
film"
HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!
Han är sannerligen pålitligt inkompetent den käre
X. En dröm för de stora filmbolagen, alltid beredd att rycka
ut och ösa lovord över en ny
megabudget bajshög från Hollywood. Mannen hyllar alltid
det allra mest banala, det sämsta av vad mainstream filmen har
att bjuda.
OK, smaken är delad och troligen står Sveriges befolkning
på X's sida i ett smaktest, men detta är MIN sida som handlar
mest om kultfilm, och
här hyllas alltid det mer originella personliga framför
mainstreamsörja som steriliserats grundligt efter att först
ha gått genom otal producentled.
Om det är någon som mot förmodan läser detta
så antar jag också att det är en älskare av
mer alternativa filmer och knappast någon som följer
X råd, så visst, det är ju lite av att slå
in en öppen dörr att ge sig på X här.
Jag gillar jag inte själv alla av
John Waters filmer, men i Hairspray fick han verkligen till det i
ett varmjärtat och kulört camp-mästerverk, och
som naturligtvis är mycket bättre än den SÄMRE
nyversionen
