This gem of a Crime Comedy must've went below the radar in the 1990's
and I had never
heard of it before (this written in april 2024). This film should've
been a Cult movie.
A very entertaining and light-hearted Neo-Noir with a great cast that
made this film click.
Special mention to Danny Aiello as the "Hero", James Spader
as the Bad Guy and to
Charlize Theron as the Femme Fatale.
19 years old Theron in her debut role really makes an
impression as Norwegian Helga.
She can be seen in the nude (not a big thing for a then Top fashion
model) and she has
a truly great catfight (hailed for it's style of authenticity) with
Teri Hatcher's Becky.

This film has a big gallery of characters and each one
of them are interesting to get
to know, and the films many separate story lines do connect finally.
Sort of in the
"Pulp Fiction" style, but yet with it's own quite considerable
and unique charm.
The Story:
Becky is an alpine skier and has finished 4th at the
Olympics twice and her unlikeable
ex-husband Roy is shot when two men home invades, the sadistic killer
Lee (James
Spader) and ex-mobster Dosmo (Danny Aiello). Becky is not killed and
stumbles
out seeking for help. Drenched in blood she alerts two vice cops, Alvin
(Jeff Daniels)
and Wes (Eric Stoltz) who are the first cops to enter the crime scene.
There are Helga the Norwegian (Theron) as the bad girlfriend
of Lee, Becky the skier
(Teri Hatcher), the hysterical British art dealer Hopper (funny Greg
Cruttwell) with
his swimming dog - The Dog is Great. Also, there are the suicidal film
director Teddy
(film director Paul Mazursky), the nurse Audrey (Marsha Mason), Hopper's
sister
Susan (Glenne Headley) and cameo roles by Keith Carradine and Louise
Fletcher.
Great Fun and Highly Recommended and not just for fans
of Charlize Theron.
The film is presented in widescreen 2.35:1 with english
audio 5.1 or 2.0 and with
english subtitles - region A only.
Extras: Audio commentary by John Herzfield, a conversation with John
Herzfeld
and his friend Sylvester Stallone (35 minutes), Q & A with Charlize
Theron, Glenne
Headley, John Herzfeld and others (30 minutes), Making of featurette
(7 minutes),
B Rolls (7 minutes), Cast and Crew soundbites (17 minutes) and a trailer
